18-Month Requirement

Overview

18-Month Requirement: Overview

Starting on October 1, 2007, their will no longer be an 18-month conditional license. After October 1st, an applicant for the real estate salesperson examination must show proof of three courses prior to the state exam. Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one other course from a designated list will be required.

If you pass the state exam and submit your license paperwork prior to October 1, 2007, and if you submitted your license application with only Real Estate Principles, you have an 18-month conditional license. You will now need to complete two additional courses within 18 months of the date your license was issued. Your license will then last four years instead of 18 months.

One of these courses must be California Real Estate Practice.

Quite often we find that people have courses from a past college degree that are accepted by the DRE. The most common courses people seem to have are General Accounting, Micro or Macro Economics, and Business Law. As long as you can provide official proof of completion, it does not matter how long ago you took these courses.
